Katherine Fink

 

Katherine Fink maintains a distinctive and versatile career. She was nationally recognized for her work with the Borealis Wind Quintet in performance, commissions, publishing, teaching and recording. The Borealis recorded five cds, including the Grammy nominated “A La Carte”. Additionally, Fink has recorded the flute works of Robert Baksa, is featured soloist on “Reel Life, music of film composers”, and in the many recordings of the New York Pops, the Metropolitan Opera high definition movie broadcasts, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Eos, Philharmonia Virtuosi and the Windham Chamber Music series.

Fink has played on many major film scores and television commercials and is heard on albums by Tony Bennett, Maureen McGovern, Harolyn Blackwell, and Arlene Auger. She has also performed in live concerts, television broadcasts and on tour with numerous popular icons including Yasin Bey (Mos Def), Andrea Bocelli, Chris Botti, Darlene Love, Barry Manilow, Liza Minnelli, Milton Nascimento, Pink Martini, Doc Severinsen, The Grateful Dead and Leslie Uggams.

As featured soloist, Fink has appeared at Carnegie Hall, at Lincoln Center in the Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and on both the Brooklyn Library and Brooklyn Museum series. She has performed and presented lecture/discussions at the National Flute Association conventions and in New York City at New York Flute Club concerts. She is prominent in the New York area orchestral scene as principal flute and featured soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Queens Symphony and the New York Pops, as long time extra with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and guest principal flutist with the area’s top symphonic groups.

Her playing is highlighted on Broadway in the current sensation, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”, and recent past hits, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”, Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” and the Tony award winning revival of “Ragtime” (including cast albums).

An experienced educator, Fink has given master classes in flute performance, chamber music and orchestral repertoire throughout the U.S. and at the prestigious Verbier Festival in Switzerland. She is on the faculty of New Jersey City University and CUNY York College.

With the Borealis Wind Quintet, Fink has commissioned works by Bob Brookmeyer, Eric Ewazen and Philip Wharton, and has been gifted commissions by many composers including Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec. The Cimarron Press library features “Borealis Select Editions”, including new works and revised editions of standard repertoire.

Fink holds a B.M. with honors from the Eastman School of Music, where she worked closely with Samuel Baron and Joseph Mariano and a M.M. from SUNY at Stony Brook. She has played Haynes flutes exclusively since 1970.
