What is Customization?

It depends… Here at Haynes, all of our Custom line of Flutes are made to order. There are no standard models, no normal flutes, nothing ordinary, or day-to-day. Every flute has been given the specification decided by one of our dealers, our artists, our customers, or by the Haynes team when we order flutes to take around the world to festivals and conventions. Decisions have to be made about every aspect of these flutes, and only after all the information is specified, can we begin making the beautiful instruments we know and love.

Level 1 - The Basics

  • Deciding the tube thickness - Haynes makes .014, .016, .018 in Silver; .016, .018 in 5% Gold; .012, .014 in 14K Gold and .012 for 10K and 19.5K Gold.

  • Offset G or inline G? B footjoint or C Footjoint? Open holes or closed holes? (or a mixture?!)

  • Soldered or Drawn Toneholes? Haynes invented Drawn Toneholes in 1898, so we have always given the option of drawn toneholes on our Silver and 5% Gold flutes.

  • Do you want an E mechanism or a High E Facilitator? Making the 3rd octave E speak more easily, more in tune, and more reliably at all dynamics.

  • C# Trill, D# Roller - mechanism additions to make life easier.

  • Lip plate and riser material. At Haynes we make lip plates for our Custom headjoints in either Sterling Silver, 9K (For Q Fusion) and 14K Gold. Risers are available in Sterling Silver, 14K, 18K White Gold and Platinum.

Level 2 - Beauty, Sonority, Aesthetic, Opulence

  • Tonehole Material. Haynes makes soldered toneholes in either Sterling Silver or 14K Gold, and these toneholes can be added to any Custom flute. Even if you would like one or two tonesholes in a different metal, everything is possible.

  • Rings, Ribs, Posts, Key material. Again, the options available with Haynes are Sterling Silver or 14K gold. It is even possible to order individual keys or parts, in different metals - for example a 14K D# Roller on a Silver Mechanism.

  • Engraving is available on the keys, crown, rings, lip plate and really anywhere else you would like it. We have a dedicated page for the engraving styles we use here. There are standard patterns that we use with our engravers, but themed, stylized and personalized engraving is also possible upon consultation.

  • Crowns. We have taken this to a whole new level and have popularized beautiful, gem-encrusted, decorative crowns. You can read all the options here.

Level 3 - Personalization

With a heightened level of consultation with the Haynes team and our makers and engravers, we can make a flute for you that is not only unique, but specially personalized to you, your ideas, your personality, your passions, your identity. If you can dream it, we want to make it. A flute that will be Unmistakably Haynes, Unmistakably Yours.

  • Changing keywork position, shape, texture and appearance whether for ergonomic, physiological or aesthetic purposes.

  • Gem setting. Normally reserved for our Custom Crowns - we can work with skilled jewellers to set stones and jewels into the metal of the keywork and the body of the flute.

  • Finger rests. Built into the body of the flute itself can be a useful ergonomic feature.

  • Voicing. Once you have worked with the makers on the design and specification elements of your flute, you can meet with the team of expert technicians at Haynes to fine-tune how the flute speaks, reacts and articulates. Adjusting toneholes, pad-seating, spring tension, key height, mechanism feel, and honing the headjoint cut until you are at a point where you feel more at one than ever with your new Haynes flute.
