Karen Kobayashi is a Japanese flutist currently attending the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studies with Jeffrey Khaner and Chelsea Knox. At Curtis, she holds the Curtis Institute of Music Fellowship.

Her journey with the flute began at the age of eight through her school’s music program in Thailand. Karen continued her studies in Chicago, USA, with Hideko Amano and later in Toronto, Canada, with Louis Papachristos before joining the studio of Susan Hoeppner at the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Karen is an alumna of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. These experiences in youth ensembles deepened her passion for orchestral music and her appreciation for the shared art of music making. She won the first prize at the 2024-25 Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra concerto competition, and made her debut as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall in 2025.

During her time in Toronto, Karen has appeared as a soloist with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra, the Cathedral Buffs Symphony Orchestra, the North York Concert Orchestra, and the Taylor Academy Faculty-led Chamber Orchestra at Koerner Hall. She has received awards and recognition in numerous competitions, including the 2024 CanAmerican Flute Symposium Solo Artist Competition, Oakville Chamber Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition, the Taylor Academy Concerto Competition, 2023 North York Concert Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition, MOYSE International Flute Competition, 2022 Walgreens National Concerto Competition, Society of American Musicians Competition, and the Chicago Flute Club Student Competition.

Karen has also had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses with distinguished flutists including Emmanuel Pahud, Julien Beaudiment, Michel Moragues, Silvia Careddu, Paul Edmund-Davies, Ransom Wilson, Denis Bluteau, Joanna G’froerer, Kayla Burggraf, Demarre McGill, Jonathan Keeble, and Nancy Stagnitta.

She recently appeared on the “Introduction” of WFMT, Chicago’s classical music radio station.

Karen is honored to represent the Haynes family as a Haynes Young Artist.
