Dr. Chelsea Tanner is a classical flutist, educator, and mindset coach whose work bridges performance, pedagogy, and long-term career development for musicians. She is currently on the flute faculty at the Colburn Community School and is Chair of the Career and Artistic Development Committee for the National Flute Association. Chelsea has previously served on the faculties at SUNY Potsdam (Crane School of Music) and Penn State University.
Most recently, Chelsea led the flute platform at tonebase, where she directed content strategy, produced over 100 educational lessons, and collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists while building a global online learning community for flutists. In this role, she created courses, livestreams, and resource materials designed to support both artistic excellence and professional sustainability.
An active performer and freelancer based in Los Angeles, she appears regularly in orchestral and chamber settings. Nationally, has performed with ensembles including the Boise Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, and New Haven Symphony Orchestra. She previously served as Second Flute of the Central Texas Philharmonic (2016-2019) and as Acting Principal Flute of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been a fellow at the National Repertory Orchestra and attended the Aspen Music Festival.
In addition to her performing and academic work, Chelsea is a frequent presenter at universities, festivals, and national conferences, offering workshops on performance anxiety, practice strategies, and career development. She has created extensive educational resources, including online academies, orchestral excerpt guides, and flute fundamentals materials used by musicians internationally.
As a chamber musician, she performs with Emissary Quartet (EQ), a flute quartet dedicated to furthering the flute quartet repertoire. EQ has performed all over the country collaborating with visual artists and dancers, while also giving numerous masterclasses at universities. The quartet has been awarded numerous grants for their debut album [moment]um (2026).
Chelsea holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Artist Diploma from The University of Texas at Austin, where she studied with Marianne Gedigian. She earned her Master of Music from Carnegie Mellon University under Jeanne Baxtresser and her Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State University, studying with Katherine Borst Jones.
