Ami Humphreys is a Japanese-Australian flutist from Sydney, in their first year of training at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) under Alison Mitchell.
As an orchestral musician, Ami was a fellow with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 2025, and will be the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's 2027 Flute Fellow. They have performed with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Orchestra, and Moorambilla Voices. Ami was Principal Flute of the Australian Youth Orchestra, which saw them performing at the Rheingau Music Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and summer series concerts at the Concertgebouw and Musikverein.
Ami is passionate about chamber music and its strong ability to connect all people. They are a core member of Sydney-based chamber orchestra Caesura Ensemble and new music collective Scalp. Through noise improvisation, they have discovered lesser-known or appreciated characteristics of the flute that feel like extensions of the human body or voice.
As a soloist, Ami was featured in ANAM’s Mostly Mozart series, a finalist in the Hopkins Bradford Youth Concerto Competition in Melbourne, 2nd prize winner of the 2025 Flute Society of New South Wales Open Age Championship, semi-finalist in ANAM's Annual Concerto Competition, and 2nd prize winner of the 2026 Leslie Barklamb Scholarship.
A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ami studied modern and Baroque flute with James Kortum, Emma Sholl and Melissa Farrow. During their studies, they had the privilege of completing an overseas exchange at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, receiving invaluable musical insights from Ulla Miilmann and Russell Itani.
